National AGC Grand Award:  MCTC was honored to receive the National AGC Grand Award at the AGC National Convention in March 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Build America awards honor AGC members who build the nation's most impressive construction projects ranging across the building, highway and transportation, utility infrastructure, and federal and heavy divisions. Build America winners excel in the areas of:

  • state-of-the-art advancement
  • project management
  • innovation in construction techniques or materials
  • safety record
  • client service
  • community relations
  • environmental sensitivity
  • partnering excellence

NOVEmber 2021

  • MidCoast Full Court Press: As the project countdown clock ticked off the last weeks and days of the project the team continued to push through many obstacles to complete the remaining activities to finish the elevated stations, commission the elevators, finalize fire life and safety inspections, gain acceptance for ADA requirements and finish the 191 safety certifications required by the California Public Utilities Commission to allow the trains to start operating and meet the SANDAG published opening date for revenue service. Work was completed on Friday with final certifications received only 72 hours before opening day, allowing one day of final cleanup and preparation on Saturday. The result was a historic grand opening party on Sunday 11/21/21 attended by nearly 10,000 happy transit riders a delighted public agency and smiles on the faces of the many public officials that attended the ribbon cutting ceremony.

     

    AGC Build San Diego Award Project of the Year: While the MidCoast project approached the finish line, other portions of the project were already winning awards. The completed $100M Elvira to Morena Double Track (EMDT) project adds 2.6 miles of new double track capability to a critical portion of the 351-mile corridor which hosts 50+ trains a day that include commuter rail (Coaster), Amtrak intercity passenger rail, Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company (BNSF) freight rail services. The project was awarded the Build San Diego Heavy/Highway Construction Project of the Year award for its positive impact on the community by reducing commuter delays, improving environmental conditions from reduced train idling, and safely executing an extremely successful high-profile project with zero train incidents that included 43 planned weekend shutdowns. Congratulations to the team!

     

    Circulate San Diego – Momentum Award 2021:  The AGC award wasn’t the only one the MidCoast team won this quarter! They also won the Circulate San Diego Momentum Award which recognize and highlight the leaders and projects in the San Diego region that are creating excellent mobility choices and vibrant, healthy neighborhoods while promoting sustainable growth across San Diego County. This award was especially unique in the fact that the award committee created a whole new award category to celebrate the great success of the newly completed MidCoast Trolley! The well-deserved award was accepted by Deputy Project Manager Eric Meisgeier and Stations Manager Ketty Avila, as pictured in the photo below.

  • Parking Lot Closures for Transit Center Improvements: Beginning Monday, July 26, and continuing intermittently through Monday, August 9, full closures of the parking lots at the Old Town Transit Center will be in place as crews make improvements to the those lots. Improvement activities include cleaning and layout inspections, and concrete repairs and replacement. Closures will rotate intermittently throughout the different parking lots. Two parking lots may be closed at a time, but access will be maintained to the remaining lot. Crews will begin improvement activities in the north parking lot and will work their way south. Each closure will be in place for 24 hours a day. Please note that while regular work days will be Mondays through Fridays, some additional weekend work is required. Following the concrete repairs and improvements, crews will return to stripe the parking lots during non-revenue service hours. View additional information.

  • Full Closures of Northbound and Southbound Morena Boulevard: Beginning Tuesday, July 6, and continuing through Thursday, July 8, full nighttime closures of northbound and southbound Morena Boulevard will be in place as crews place asphalt near the future Clairemont Drive Trolley Station. Work also will require full nighttime closures of the intersection at Ingulf Street. Work and closure hours will be from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night. Detour signs will be posted.   • La Jolla Village Square Surface Parking Area Closures: UPDATE: In late June, crews will begin the third of four phases in their effort to reconfigure the La Jolla Village Square surface parking area. This is a continuation of work that began on March 2, 2021 to improve access to the Nobel Drive Trolley Station parking structure as well as overall traffic flow. Construction activities will include asphalt demolition, new asphalt and concrete placement, lighting installations, striping, and landscaping. Typical work hours will be Mondays through Fridays, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Work will be phased and completed in fenced-off sections of the parking area. Access to businesses, the mall entrance, the underground parking garage, and the Nobel Drive Trolley Station parking structure will be maintained at all times. Work is expected to be completed by fall 2021. In anticipation of this work, the Nobel Drive Trolley Station parking structure opened to the public on February 28, 2021, and is available for use by retail patrons.

  • Lane Reductions and Freeway Off-ramp Closure at Balboa Avenue: Beginning Sunday, May 9, and continuing for approximately three weeks, nighttime lane reductions will be in place on Balboa Avenue/Garnet Avenue, between Mission Bay Drive and Moraga Avenue, for crews to make improvements along the median. Additionally, nighttime full closures of the northbound I-5 off-ramp to Balboa Avenue will be in place. Work and closure hours will be Sundays through Thursdays, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night.   • Closure of Eastbound Nobel Drive: On Wednesday, April 14, an overnight full closure of eastbound Nobel Drive will be in place from the entrances of the Shops at La Jolla Village and La Jolla Village Square to the southbound I-5 on-ramp. Additionally, access to the southbound I-5 on-ramp from eastbound Nobel Drive will be closed. During the closures, crews will pave the roadway. Work and closure hours will be from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Driveway access will be maintained at all times. Please heed all traffic signs and use caution when traveling near the work area. View additional information. 

  • Full Closures of Genesee Avenue: On Friday, April 16, crews will begin asphalt demolition, paving, striping, and traffic signal installations on Genesee Avenue. This work begins the final phase of roadway construction activities on Genesee Avenue for the Mid-Coast Trolley project. Work will continue for approximately four weeks and will require full closures of Genesee Avenue between Regents Road and Nobel Drive. Crews will work in sections, and the full closures will be phased. For the first two weeks, work and closure hours will be from 8 p.m. through 5 p.m. the following day, Sundays through Thursdays. Please note that the first night of work has been scheduled on a Friday to accommodate a local event. Residential and school driveway access will be maintained.   • Lane Closures at Genesee Avenue and Nobel Drive Intersection: On Thursday, April 15, there will be overnight lane closures at the intersection of Genesee Avenue and Nobel Drive for paving work. A full closure of northbound Genesee Avenue will be in place from Nobel Drive to Esplanade Court. Additionally, full closures will be in place on eastbound and westbound Nobel Drive between Genesee Avenue and Lombard Place. Work hours will be 11:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. Residential access will be maintained at all times. Please expect noise as this work is completed and use caution when traveling near the work area.

  • Balboa Avenue Lane Closures: Beginning Friday, April 9, and continuing for approximately two weeks, lane closures will be in place on eastbound Balboa Avenue, between the Morena Boulevard overpass to Balboa Avenue and Moraga Avenue, as crews complete bus pad improvements. Additionally, MTS bus service will be temporarily relocated east of the bus stop at Balboa Avenue and Moraga Avenue from Friday, April 9, through Friday, April 23. Through access on eastbound Balboa Avenue and ramp access from Morena Boulevard will be maintained. Please follow posted signage and use caution when traveling in the area.   • Full Closure of La Jolla Village Drive: On Thursday, April 1, an overnight full closure will be in place on the westbound and eastbound lanes of La Jolla Village Drive, between Genesee Avenue and Costa Verde Boulevard. The closure will be in effect from 11:59 p.m. on Thursday to 5 a.m. on Friday, for SDG&E crews to perform underground electrical activities.   • Full Closure of Executive Square Driveway: Beginning Thursday, March 18 and continuing through Sunday, March 22, a full closure of the Executive Square driveway will be in place for crews to replace a cross gutter. Construction activities will include demolition and placing concrete, which will require several days to cure. Work and closure hours will be from 8 p.m. on Thursday to 5 a.m. on Monday. Access will be maintained, and signage will be in place. Please use caution when traveling in the work area. View additional information.

  • Full Closure of Executive Square Driveway: Beginning Wednesday, March 3 at 6:30 a.m. and continuing through Monday, March 8, at 5 a.m., a full closure of the Executive Square driveway will be in place. The closure will be in effect just east of the driveway's intersection with Genesee Avenue for crews to set a staircase for the future Executive Drive Trolley Station and replace a cross gutter to help improve drainage at the intersection.   • La Jolla Village Square Surface Parking Area Closures: On Tuesday, March 2, crews will begin efforts to reconfigure the La Jolla Village Square surface parking area.   • Full Closure of Northbound Pacific Highway: On Saturday, February 27, a full closure will be in place on northbound Pacific Highway for crews to repave the roadway. Lane closures will be in place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., from Kurtz Street to the intersection with Taylor Street. This work is part of ongoing improvements for the Old Town Transit Center and adjacent roadways, to prepare for an increase in Trolley crossings at Taylor Street upon completion of the Mid-Coast Trolley project. View additional information. 

  • Full Closure of Southbound Morena Boulevard: UPDATE: On Thursday, February 18, crews will continue to set canopies for the future Clairemont Drive Trolley Station. To accommodate this work, a full closure will be in place on southbound Morena Boulevard from Gesner Street to Ingulf Street. Work and closure hours will be from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. This is a continuation of work that began on Tuesday, February 9.   • Santa Fe Street Traffic Shift: Beginning Tuesday, February 16 and continuing for approximately three weeks, traffic changes will be in effect on Santa Fe Street for crews to pave the Rose Creek Bikeway. Impacts will be in place between Karl Strauss Brewing Company and Jaguar Coventry Cars of San Diego. One lane will remain open at all times, and flaggers will be present to direct traffic. Driveway impacts are anticipated but access will be maintained. Work hours will be Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. View additional information.

  • Construction of UTC Transit Center Parking Structure: Beginning in early February and continuing through November 2021, construction activities will take place in the surface parking area of University Towne Centre, near Macy’s, as crews build a parking structure for the UTC Transit Center. Work hours will be Mondays through Fridays, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Please use caution when traveling near the work area. View additional information.

  • Full Closure of Southbound Morena Boulevard: On Tuesday, February 9 and Wednesday, February 10, crews will be setting canopies for the future Clairemont Drive Trolley Station.   • Full Closures of La Jolla Village Drive: Beginning the week of Sunday, January 31 and continuing for approximately two weeks, full closures will be in place on the eastbound and westbound lanes of La Jolla Village Drive. During the closures, SDG&E crews will perform underground electrical activities. The first week of full closures will begin on the westbound lanes of La Jolla Village Drive and the following week, there will be full closures on the eastbound lanes of the roadway. Work and closure hours will be Sundays through Thursdays, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night. View additional information. 

  • Full Closure of Executive Drive: Beginning Sunday, January 17 and continuing through Tuesday, January 19, a full closure of Executive Drive will be in place east of Genesee Avenue. During the closure, crews will demolish the area and pour concrete to remove and replace a cross gutter. Work and closure hours will be from 7 p.m. on Sunday through 3 p.m. on Tuesday.   • Widening of W. Morena Boulevard: Beginning Wednesday, January 13 and continuing for approximately three months, lane closures will be in place on W. Morena Boulevard. Crews will widen the boulevard and construct a pedestrian ramp that will provide access to the future Tecolote Road Trolley Station. The closures will be in place near the Tecolote Road overpass. One lane will remain open in each direction and through traffic will be maintained. Work hours will be Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., but closures will be in place 24 hours a day.   • Full Closure of Friars Road: On Tuesday, January 12, a full closure of eastbound and westbound Friars Road will be in place between Sea World Drive and Napa Street, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. This closure is necessary for crews to perform a traffic switch in preparation for roadway restoration work. Please detour via Sea World Drive, Tecolote Road, Morena Boulevard, and Napa Street. The restoration work on Friars Road will continue through the remainder of January. One lane will remain open in each direction during this time. Additional nighttime full closures may be needed, and notice will be provided beforehand. View additional information.

  • Full Closure of Regents Road: Beginning Sunday, December 20 and continuing through Tuesday, December 22, a full closure of Regents Road will be in place between Genesee Avenue and Health Sciences Drive. During the closure, crews will demolish the roadway and pour concrete to remove and replace a cross gutter. Work and closure hours will be from 8 p.m. on Sunday through 1 p.m. on Tuesday. November 2020

  • Full Closure of Vega Street: Beginning Monday, November 30 and continuing for approximately 3 weeks, a full closure of Vega Street will be in place at the intersection of W. Morena Boulevard and continuing southwest to its terminus. During the closure, crews will demolish and reconstruct Vega Street to improve access to the future Tecolote Road Trolley Station. Construction activities will include demolition, excavation, paving, curb installation, and traffic signal modifications. Typical work hours will be Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Access to nearby businesses will be maintained. View additional information.

  • Full Closures of Washington Street: On Tuesday, November 17 and Wednesday, November 18, nighttime full closures of eastbound and westbound Washington Street will be in place between Hancock Street and Frontage Road. During the closures, crews will complete work on the underground communication and electrical systems for the Trolley in addition to repaving the roadway.   • Partial Intersection Closure at Genesee Avenue and La Jolla Village Drive: On Monday, November 9, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., crews will work on the traffic signals and rewire connections at the intersection of Genesee Avenue and La Jolla Village Drive for the future Trolley. A full southbound closure on Genesee Avenue will be in place between Executive Drive and Nobel Drive, with one northbound lane open. Additionally, full westbound and eastbound closures of La Jolla Village Drive will be in place between Genesee Avenue and Regents Garden Row/Coste Verde Boulevard. There will be no westbound or eastbound access through the intersection of Genesee Avenue and La Jolla Village Drive during this time. View additional information.

  • Construction of Trolley Parking Structure at La Jolla Village Square: UPDATE: Beginning Wednesday, October 21 and continuing for approximately one month, crews will reconfigure the parking area adjacent to the future Nobel Drive Trolley Station parking structure. Work will include paving, striping, and curb replacement. Typical work hours will be Sunday through Thursday from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. each night, with occasional weekend work. Please expect noise. UPDATE: Beginning Monday, August 3 and continuing for approximately two weeks, crews will be performing utility work for the future Nobel Drive Trolley Station parking structure in the La Jolla Village Square parking area. Work hours are Sunday through Thursday, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night. Access to businesses, the shop entrance, and underground parking will be maintained at all times. UPDATE: Beginning Saturday, April 25, crews will be placing concrete for construction of the future Nobel Drive Trolley Station parking structure in the La Jolla Village Square parking area. Concrete pours will continue intermittently through November 2020. Construction noise from back up alarms and concrete trucks may be present. The concrete pours will typically begin at 12:05 a.m., but work hours may vary. Access to businesses and shops will be maintained at all times. Construction of the parking structure began in January 2020 and is anticipated to continue through fall 2020.   • Santa Fe Street Traffic Shift and Parking Changes: On Monday, October 19, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., a traffic shift will be in place on Santa Fe Street as crews restripe the roadway between Karl Strauss Brewing Company (5965 Santa Fe Street) and Coventry Cars of San Diego (5097 Santa Fe Street), to accommodate construction of the Rose Creek Bikeway. Following the traffic shift, Santa Fe Street will be in its final alignment and parking on the west side of the street will be removed permanently. Flaggers will be in place to direct motorists.   • Closures and Traffic Shifts for Balboa Avenue Bridge Construction: On Thursday, October 15, from 10 p.m.to 5 a.m., a full closure of the northbound I-5 off-ramp to Balboa Avenue will be in place for crews to perform construction activities on the Balboa Avenue Bridge. Additionally, lane restrictions and a traffic shift will be in place on Balboa Avenue/Garnet Avenue. One lane will remain open to traffic in each direction. A single lane closure also will be in place on northbound I-5, between the Mission Bay Drive and Balboa Avenue off-ramps. Detours routes and signage will be in place. View additional information. 

  • Full Closure of Voigt Drive Bridge: Beginning Monday, October 19, a full closure of the Voigt Drive bridge will go into effect. East of the bridge, Voigt Drive will reopen to traffic. Additionally, inbound access to Scripps Health facilities via Voigt Drive will be available from the east only and outbound access will remain closed. Typical work hours will be Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. but may vary depending on the type of construction activity required. The full closure of Voigt Drive bridge is expected to be in place through April 2021. This work is part of ongoing efforts for the Voigt Drive Improvements project, which will realign Campus Point Drive permanently to provide direct access to the future Voigt Drive Trolley Station and to improve traffic flow in the area. View additional information.

  • Closures of Southbound Genesee Avenue and the Genesee Avenue/La Jolla Village Drive Intersection: Beginning Sunday, September 27 at 6 p.m. and continuing through Tuesday, September 29 at 12 p.m., a full closure of the southbound lanes on Genesee Avenue will be in place from Executive Drive to the UTC Transit Center. Additionally, on Sunday, September 27 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., eastbound and westbound access at the Genesee Avenue and La Jolla Village Drive intersection will be closed. The closures are necessary for crews to widen Genesee Avenue and construct a single bus pad for the new Metropolitan Transit System bus stop located near Esplanade Court. Construction activities will include demolition work, restriping, and setting K-rail as well as installing railing and performing exterior finish work on the Trolley bridge. As work progresses, crews will reopen a single lane on southbound Genesee Avenue. Please heed all traffic signs and use caution when traveling near the work area. View additional information.

  • Lane Reductions and Bus Stop Closure on Balboa Avenue: Beginning Monday, September 14 and continuing through Monday, September 21, a single lane closure will be in place on eastbound Balboa Avenue, between the northbound I-5 off-ramp to Balboa Avenue and Moraga Avenue, as crews complete bus stop improvements. Additionally, service will be suspended at the Balboa Avenue and Moraga Avenue bus stop for approximately two weeks beginning Monday, September 14. Through access on eastbound Balboa Avenue and ramp access from Morena Boulevard will be maintained. Please follow posted signage and use caution when traveling in the area.   • Full Closures of Rose Canyon Bike Path: Beginning Tuesday, September 8 and continuing for approximately two weeks, nighttime full closures of the Rose Canyon Bike Path will be in effect for crews to conduct landscaping work. Due to limited construction access, full closures are necessary to accommodate this work. Closure hours will be Sunday through Thursday, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night. The closures have been scheduled during nighttime hours to pose as little impact as possible to cyclists and pedestrians; shuttle service will not be provided during the scheduled work hours. View additional information.

  • Full Closures of Genesee Avenue: UPDATE: Beginning Sunday, August 30 through Tuesday, September 1, and continuing Tuesday, September 8 through Thursday, September 10, full closures of southbound lanes on Genesee Avenue will be in place between Executive Drive and La Jolla Village Drive. Work and closure hours begin at 6 p.m. on the first day of the scheduled closures and will continue through 2 p.m. on the final day of the closures. As work progresses, crews will reopen a single lane on southbound Genesee Avenue. Please heed all traffic signs and use caution when traveling near the work area. This is a continuation of efforts to install bus pads for new Metropolitan Transit System bus stops that will be located adjacent to the future Executive Drive Trolley Station. Closures began on Sunday, August 23 on northbound lanes.   • Full Closure of Nobel Drive: On Sunday, August 30, an overnight full closure of Nobel Drive will be in place from the northbound I-5 off-ramp to the entrances of the Shops at La Jolla Village and La Jolla Village Square, as crews install new railings on the Trolley bridge above Nobel Drive. There also will be a full closure of the southbound I-5 on-ramp from Nobel Drive. The closure will be in effect from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Driveway access will be maintained at all times.   • Full Closures of Northbound Genesee Avenue: Beginning Sunday, August 23, a series of full closures of the northbound lanes on Genesee Avenue will be in place between La Jolla Village Drive and Executive Drive. During the closures, crews will install bus pads for new Metropolitan Transit System bus stops that will be located adjacent to the future Executive Drive Trolley Station. Work and closure hours will be from 6 p.m. on Sunday through 2 p.m. on Monday. As work progresses, crews will reopen a single lane on northbound Genesee Avenue.   • Construction of Trolley Parking Structure at La Jolla Village Square: UPDATE: Beginning Monday, August 3 and continuing for approximately two weeks, crews will be performing utility work for the future Nobel Drive Trolley Station parking structure in the La Jolla Village Square parking area. Work hours are Sunday through Thursday, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night. Access to businesses, the shop entrance, and underground parking will be maintained at all times. UPDATE: Beginning Saturday, April 25, crews will be placing concrete for construction of the future Nobel Drive Trolley Station parking structure in the La Jolla Village Square parking area. Concrete pours will continue intermittently through November 2020. Construction noise from back up alarms and concrete trucks may be present. The concrete pours will typically begin at 12:05 a.m., but work hours may vary. Access to businesses and shops will be maintained at all times.   • Lane Closures on Pacific Highway, Taylor Street, and Rosecrans Street: UPDATE: Beginning Monday, July 27, construction activities will begin at the Old Town Transit Center for transit related improvements. This is a continuation of ongoing efforts to prepare for the anticipated increase in Trolley crossings at Taylor Street upon completion of the Mid-Coast Trolley project. Work began in late February 2020 and is anticipated to continue through summer 2021. Intermittent lane closures will continue to be in place on Pacific Highway, Taylor Street, and Rosecrans Street and additional work is planned for the nearby Park & Ride.   • Partial Closure of Genesee Avenue/La Jolla Village Drive Intersection: On Tuesday, June 30, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., there will be a partial closure of the intersection at Genesee Avenue and La Jolla Village Drive as crews pour concrete on the Trolley bridge. Additionally, there will be a full closure of the southbound lanes of Genesee Avenue and only one northbound lane will remain open to traffic, between Nobel Drive and Executive Drive. Beginning at 9 p.m., there will be full closures of westbound and eastbound La Jolla Village Drive between Genesee Avenue and Regents Garden Row/Costa Verde Boulevard. There will be no westbound or eastbound access through the Genesee Avenue and La Jolla Village Drive intersection while work is underway.   • Full Closure of Voigt Drive: A full closure of Voigt Drive is in effect between parking lot P701 and Campus Point Drive. The closure is required for the Voigt Drive Improvements Project, which will realign Voigt Drive and Campus Point Drive permanently to provide direct access to the future Voigt Drive Trolley Station and to improve traffic flow in the area. The closure began Monday, April 20 and is anticipated to continue through fall 2021. Typical work hours will be Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., though occasional nighttime and weekend work may be required. Traffic controls will be in place including temporary traffic signals, temporary wayfinding and detour signage, and roadway and sidewalk reconfigurations. UPDATE: Beginning July 6, 2020, access to and from Scripps Health facilities via Voigt Drive will be closed. Both inbound and outbound access will be closed for approximately one month while crews rebuild the driveway and adjacent roadway. Southbound access on Campus Point Drive will remain open and access to the UC San Diego Medical Center will be maintained, though there may be traffic delays.   • Daytime Lane Closures on Interstate 5: On Tuesday, May 12, a single lane closure will be in effect on southbound Interstate 5 (I-5) between Genesee Avenue and Voigt Drive.   • Full Closure of Voigt Drive: UPDATE: The closure of Voigt Drive has been revised and is now in effect between The Preuss School driveway and Campus Point Drive. Beginning June 1, 2020, the closure will be in effect between parking lot P701 and Campus Point Drive. Access to and from Scripps Health facilities via Voigt Drive will be maintained through May 31, 2020. Beginning June 1, 2020, vehicles will be permitted to access the facilities via Voigt Drive but will be required to exit via Genesee Avenue. (Note that access via Voigt Drive will only be available from the west, and, while permitted, exiting vehicles must turn right onto Voigt Drive.) The closure is required for the Voigt Drive Improvements project, which will realign Voigt Drive and Campus Point Drive permanently to provide direct access to the future Voigt Drive Trolley Station and to improve traffic flow in the area. Morena Boulevard to improve access to the future Tecolote Road Trolley Station. Crews will be removing vegetation and preparing the embankment for construction of a pedestrian ramp that will connect Tecolote Road and W. Morena Boulevard.   • Overnight Closures of I-5: UPDATE: This March, a series of temporary overnight full closures will be in effect on both northbound and southbound I-5 as crews remove falsework from the Trolley overcrossing south of Nobel Drive. Beginning Monday, March 2 through Thursday, March 5, overnight full closures will be in place on northbound I-5 lanes from State Route 52 to Genesee Avenue. NOTE: Crews are completing work faster than expected and the full closures of northbound I-5 lanes are expected to be completed during the morning hours of Thursday, March 5. Full closures of southbound I-5 lanes will begin on Thursday, March 5 at 9:30 p.m. Continuing Sunday, March 8 through Thursday, March 12, overnight full closures will be in place on southbound I-5 lanes from the I-5/I-805 Interchange to Gilman Drive/La Jolla Colony Drive.   • Train Control System Upgrade: Beginning the evening of Friday, February 21, full weekend lane reductions will be in place across the railway tracks at Taylor Street as crews upgrade the train control system from the Santa Fe Depot to the Old Town Transit Center. Work and lane reductions will be in effect from 9 a.m. on Friday, February 21 through 5 a.m. on Monday, February 24.   • Tecolote Road TPSS Installation: On Tuesday, February 18, a traction power substation (TPSS), which will provide power for the Trolley, will be installed at Tecolote Road, near the railroad right-of-way. Installation work will begin at 10 p.m. on Tuesday and will continue to 9 a.m. on Wednesday. Flaggers will be present on W. Morena Boulevard during this time. This work may generate noise and crews will minimize impacts as much as possible. View additional information. 

  • Full Closures of W. Morena Boulevard: Beginning Sunday, February 9 and continuing through Thursday, February 13, full nighttime closures of northbound and southbound W.   • Full Closure of Ocean Beach Bike Path: Beginning Monday, February 3 at 6 a.m., a temporary full closure of the Ocean Beach Bike path will go into effect between Pacific Highway and Morena Boulevard. The closure will be in place for approximately four weeks while crews replace the bike path and install a handrail. The bike path is anticipated to reopen by 6 p.m. on Friday, February 28. This work was originally scheduled to begin on Tuesday, January 21 but was postponed due to unforeseen circumstances.UPDATE: the reopening of the Ocean Beach Bike Path has been been postponed.   • Construction of Trolley Parking Structure at La Jolla Village Square: On Monday, January 20, construction activities for the future Nobel Drive Trolley Station parking structure will begin in a section of the La Jolla Village Square parking area. Construction is anticipated to continue through November 2020. Typical work hours will be Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 a.m., though nighttime and weekend work may be required.   • Impacts to La Jolla Village Drive/Genesee Avenue Intersection: On Thursday, December 19, traffic controls and lane closures will be in place on Genesee Avenue as crews remove falsework from the Trolley bridge above the La Jolla Village Drive and Genesee Avenue intersection. There will be a full closure in place on the southbound lanes of Genesee Avenue and only one northbound lane will remain open to traffic, between Executive Drive and Esplanade Court. There will be no westbound or eastbound access through the La Jolla Village Drive and Genesee Avenue intersection.   • Rose Canyon Bike Path Closure: UPDATE: The previously postponed full closure of the Rose Canyon Bike Path has been rescheduled to begin on Monday, December 9, weather permitting. The closure is necessary for crews to pave the final section of the new bike path and to remove the temporary ramp currently installed near Gilman Drive. The full closure will begin at 6 a.m. on Monday, December 9 and will be in place for approximately five days. The bike path is anticipated to reopen by 6 p.m. on Friday, December 13. During construction, one lane will be closed on eastbound Balboa Avenue/Garnet Avenue between Mission Bay Drive and Moraga Avenue.   • Permanent Realignment of Rose Canyon Bike Path: In summer 2019, two sections of the Rose Canyon Bike Path will be relocated to the newly constructed permanent bike path. A portion of the temporary bike path that is now located on the shoulder of Interstate 5 will move to the newly constructed path by Monday, June 17. A second portion of the temporary bike path, now located along I-5 from north of Santa Fe Street to just north of SR-52, will move to the newly constructed path by Wednesday, July 3.   • Overnight Closures of Northbound I-5 Lanes: Beginning Tuesday, June 18, overnight closures will be in place on northbound Interstate 5 as crews remove falsework at Voigt Drive and install falsework south of Nobel Drive. Closures will be in effect on northbound I-5 from SR 52 to Genesee Avenue and will be scheduled from Tuesday, June 18, through Thursday, June 20, and again from Sunday, June 23, continuing to Friday, June 28, from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night. Closure will be in effect on SB I-5 from the I-5/I-805 Interchange to La Jolla Village Drive.   • Morena Boulevard Lane and Sidewalk Closures between Gesner Street and Jellet: Starting February 19, a sidewalk closure and traffic controls will be in effect on northbound Morena Boulevard to accommodate ongoing Mid-Coast Trolley construction activities. A single lane of northbound Morena Boulevard will be closed between Gesner Street and Jellett Street, along with the sidewalk at the southeast corner of the Morena Boulevard and Ingulf Street intersection.   • Northbound I-5 and Off-Ramp and Lane Closures at Balboa Avenue/Garnet Avenue and Grand Avenue/Garnet Avenue: As part of ongoing construction activities on the off-ramp, a full weekend closure of the I-5 off-ramp to Balboa Avenue/Garnet Avenue is scheduled from Friday, February 22, at 9 p.m. to Sunday, February 24, at 9 p.m. The off-ramp will be shifted to newly constructed pavement adjacent to the existing off-ramp.  A single lane closure of the northbound I-5 from Grand Avenue/Garnet Avenue to Balboa Avenue/Garnet Avenue will also be required from Friday, February 22, at 8 p.m. to Sunday, February 24, at 3 a.m. Additionally, motorists can anticipate nighttime closures of eastbound Balboa Avenue/Garnet Avenue on Friday, February 22, and Saturday, February 23, from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. each night. During the nighttime closures, one lane of eastbound traffic will be shifted to westbound Balboa Avenue/Garnet Avenue. Daytime single lane closures of eastbound Balboa Avenue/Garnet Avenue will also be in place Saturday, February 23, and Sunday, February 24, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day.   • Intermittent Partial Closures on Genesee Avenue: This February, intermittent partial closures continue along Genesee Avenue in support of Trolley bridge construction. Crews have now placed girders in five different intersections along Genesee Avenue, and will complete a sixth girder installation at La Jolla Village Drive. Work at the intersection of La Jolla Village Drive and Genesee Avenue is scheduled to begin Friday, February 8 at 9 p.m., with partial closures in place through Friday, February 15 at 5 a.m. Crews will be installing pre-cast girders, which are large beams used to support the Trolley bridge. The girders will be placed on top of the columns to build the viaduct, the bridge structure that will carry the Trolley along its route. Traffic controls and detour routes will be posted.

Crews will be signalizing the northbound I-5 off-ramp to Balboa Avenue/Garnet Avenue and will be shifting the off-ramp to newly constructed pavement adjacent to the existing off-ramp. Morena Boulevard and Littlefield Street while construction crews remove a temporary retaining wall support system for the Mid-Coast Trolley. To accommodate this work, a closure of southbound Morena Boulevard will be in place, and both directions of traffic will be shifted to northbound Morena Boulevard.   • Underground Systems Work: Through summer 2019, construction crews will continue intermittent nighttime work on underground communication and electrical systems for the Mid-Coast Trolley within the railroad right-of-way between Taylor Street in Old Town and Cedar Street in Downtown San Diego. Crews will generally move north to south and will work at each intersection for about one month at a time. Although the work will be in the canyon, construction crews will be using Regents Road to access, store, and transfer equipment and materials to the work site. Nighttime work hours are from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Heavy construction equipment such as excavators, loaders and trucks will be present. Please expect some noise.   • Downtown Lane Closures: Through summer 2019, construction crews will continue nighttime work on underground communication and electrical systems within the railroad right of way at Palm Street and Sassafras Street for the Mid-Coast Trolley. Work hours and lane closures will be Sunday through Thursday, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Only one direction of traffic will be closed at a time. As part of this work, crews will be installing a new traction power substation, which converts power for Trolley operations, at Olive Street near the railroad right of way, starting Monday, September 24 through summer 2019.   • Morena Boulevard Lane Closures near Tecolote Road: A nighttime closure of northbound and southbound W. Morena Boulevard, from the W. Morena Boulevard/Morena Boulevard split to Vega Street, will be in place starting the week of September 4 through early December 2018 to accommodate utility work. The closure will be in effect Sundays through Thursdays, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Please follow the posted detour signs and traffic controls when traveling near the work area.

  • Friars Road Closures: Intermittent nighttime closures of Friars Road between Sea World Drive and Napa Street are scheduled from July 25 to August 16 to accommodate construction of the San Diego River Bridge. Eastbound Friars Road will be closed from July 29 to August 1, 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. each night. Eastbound and westbound Friars Road will be closed from July 25 to July 26, from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. Full closures continue from August 5 to August 9, and August 12 to August 16, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night.   • Full Closure of All Southbound Lanes and Partial Closure of Northbound Lanes on I-5: On Tuesday, July 10, from 9 p.m. to Wednesday, July 11, at 5 a.m., there will be a full closure of southbound lanes on Interstate 5 (I-5), from the I-5/Interstate 805 (I-805) split to La Jolla Village Drive, and a partial closure of northbound lanes on I-5, from Nobel Drive to Voigt Drive. During this overnight closure, crews will be pouring concrete as part of the construction process needed to complete the Gilman Drive Bridge project. Motorists should anticipate delays.   • Upcoming La Jolla Village Drive Closure: On Thursday, June 28, both eastbound and westbound La Jolla Village Drive will be closed on the overpass above Interstate 5. Regents Road will be closed from Genesee Avenue to Health Sciences Drive, and all southbound Genesee Avenue lanes will be closed  from Campus Point Drive to Eastgate Mall. One northbound lane on Genesee Avenue will remain open and access to apartment communities will be maintained at all times. Detour routes and signage will be place.   • Ocean Beach Bike Path Closures: The Ocean Beach Bike Path is closed March 12 through March 30, 2018, for demolition of existing bridge abutment structures near the path. A second temporary closure of the bike path is scheduled for mid-April 2018 to accommodate installation of foundations for new bridge abutments. Cyclists should follow signage to detour the bike path via Pacific Highway, Taylor Street, and Morena Boulevard and use extra caution when traveling near the work area.   • La Jolla Village Drive: Crews will be restriping lanes and installing barricades along the median on a portion of La Jolla Village Drive for upcoming viaduct construction.   • I-5 Closure for Gilman Drive Bridge Concrete Pour: The March 13, 2018, closure of I-5 from the I-805 merge to La Jolla Village Drive has been rescheduled to March 26, 2018, from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. During this overnight closure, crews will pour concrete on the Gilman Drive Bridge. FEBRUARY 2018

  • Balboa Avenue/Morena Boulevard Ramp Closure: Intermittent, nighttime closures of the eastbound Balboa Avenue to northbound Morena Boulevard ramp will be in place until late summer 2018. The closures will be in place to accommodate excavation, utilities construction, and street improvement work. Work hours are Sundays through Thursdays, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night. JANUARY 2018

  • Genesee Avenue Traffic Shift: On January 2, 2018, crews will begin shifting traffic to the outer lanes of Genesee Avenue from La Jolla Village Drive to Nobel Drive. Crews also will begin construct the viaduct - a bridge structure that will carry the Trolley down the middle of Genesee Avenue. This work will be focused on Genesee Avenue, from Regents Road to Nobel Drive. Northbound and southbound lanes of Genesee Avenue will be restriped and shifted to the outer lanes from Regents Road to Nobel Drive while crews begin work in the median. Large drilling equipment will be set up within the median. Traffic control phasing and lane configuration may vary between day and night work hours. Traffic control signs, including necessary detours for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists, will be posted.   • Night Work on I-5: On January 8, 2018, crews will start work on the viaduct – a bridge structure that will carry the Trolley down I-5. This work will be focused within the median of I-5 and will require lane closures. To prepare for this construction, crews will demolish the median and restripe traffic lanes on both northbound and southbound I-5 between the Nobel Drive and La Jolla Colony Drive exits. Barricades will be installed to delineate the work area in the freeway media. Work hours will be Monday through Friday, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. and will be ongoing through early February 2018.   • Rose Creek Bikeway Construction to Start this Winter: Preliminary construction of the Rose Creek Bikeway is scheduled to begin in January 2018. Initial work will include clearing and removing vegetation in the construction area near the creek between Santa Fe Street and I-5. Major construction, which will begin in June 2018, will include construction of the trail, under-crossings and a bridge.   • Southbound I-5 Closure: Southbound I-5 lanes from the I-805 merge to La Jolla Village Drive will be closed on Monday, November 20, from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. while crews transport heavy equipment across the freeway. Detours are available via I-805. Please follow signs to detour.
  • La Jolla Colony Drive: As part of the Mid-Coast Trolley Project, San Diego Gas & Electric will be removing an existing, de-energized gas pipeline to make way for construction of the trolley tracks. To accommodate this work, closures of La Jolla Colony Drive from Rosenda Court to the I-5 La Jolla Colony Drive/Gilman Drive off-ramp will be in place November 13 to November 17 and November 19 to November 22, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly. OCTOBER 2017

  • Closures of I-5 lanes at Gilman Drive: Some night work will require lane and/or ramp closures on I-5 for work on the new Gilman Drive Bridge. Motorists should anticipate delays and take alternate routes to avoid potential congestion. This is part of a series of overnight closures needed to complete bridge infrastructure. On November 1 and 2, all of the northbound or all of the southbound lanes of I-5, from the I-805 merge to La Jolla Village Drive, will be temporarily closed overnight to prepare for adjustment of Gilman Drive falsework (temporary structures used to support the Gilman Drive bridge until final construction is completed). View additional information.
    • The southbound I-5 closure is scheduled from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. on November 1. Southbound motorists will be detoured via I-805.
    • The northbound I-5 closure is scheduled from 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. on November 2. Northbound motorists will be detoured via I-8, SR 52 and the La Jolla Village Drive ramps.
  • Morena Boulevard: A lane closure on northbound Morena Boulevard between Jutland Drive and Avati Drive will be in place starting October 30 through late November 2017 while crews continue Mid-Coast project work in the area. View map for more information.
  • Nobel Drive Sidewalk/Pedestrian Detour: The westbound Nobel Drive sidewalk from approximately University Center Lane to La Jolla Village Square Driveway will be closed for construction work beginning October 23, 2017.   • Genesee Avenue Road Widening: Work activities to widen Genesee Avenue from Regents Road to La Jolla Village Drive are ongoing. The work includes utility relocation, barrier installation, road re-striping, median and sidewalk demolition, and preparation to construct the viaduct - a bridge structure that will carry the Trolley down the middle of Genesee Avenue. Several different traffic control phases involving long-term lane closures and shifts will be ongoing as this work progresses on both northbound and southbound Genesee Avenue. Traffic control phasing and lane configuration may vary between day and night work hours. Traffic control signs, including necessary detours for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists, will be posted. These types of traffic controls will be deployed at various times through early 2018.
  • Friars Road: Crews will be working along Friars Road, between Sea World Drive and Napa Street, to build the San Diego River Bridge Double Track project in advance of Mid-Coast Trolley project construction. Work began in fall 2016 and is expected to be complete in 2019. Throughout the course of the project, several traffic control phases involving multiple lane closures and shifts will be implemented along Friars Road to help facilitate this work. September 2017

  • Closures of I-5 at Gilman Drive: In mid-September, all of the northbound or all of the southbound lanes of I-5, between the I-805 merge to La Jolla Village Drive, will be temporarily closed overnight on the dates below to prepare for placement of falsework (temporary structures used to support the Gilman Drive Bridge until final construction is completed). 
    • Northbound I-5 Closure: September 17 - 21, 9:30 p.m. - 5 a.m. each night. NB detours will be available via I-8, SR-52 and La Jolla Village Drive, and southbound detours will be available via I-805. Please anticipate significant traffic delays and follow detour signs. Motorists are encouraged to find alternate routes during these overnight closures. View additional information.
  • Tree Removal on Northbound I-5: In mid-September, crews will begin removing vegetation within the project area on the east side of northbound I-5 between La Jolla Colony Drive and Nobel Drive. Work is anticipated to continue through late 2017. Upon completion of project construction, trees and other types of vegetation will be replanted along I-5 where there is sufficient distance between the street and the new Trolley extension, as well as in other locations. For safety purposes, tree canopies when fully grown must be kept away from the overhead catenary lines associated with the new Trolley project. On Monday, August 28 through Wednesday, August 30, crews will install temporary barricades on northbound I-5 from the La Jolla Colony Drive exit to the Nobel Drive exit. Next Thursday, August 31, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., crews will be restriping lanes on both northbound and southbound I-5 lanes between the Genesee Avenue and La Jolla Village Drive ramps. Please watch for lane and ramp closures, and use alternate routes, if needed.
  • Construction Staging Begins for Rose Creek Bikeway: To prepare for upcoming bikeway construction and staging, crews will begin clearing and removing vegetation in the general project area in mid-September. Other preparatory work, including removal of trailers at the corner of Mission Bay Drive and Damon Avenue will be scheduled for late August or early September.   • Temporary Realignment of Rose Canyon Bike Path and I-5 Impacts: The existing Rose Canyon Bike Path will be temporarily closed during construction of the Trolley extension. Crews have constructed an interim bike path to reroute bicycle traffic around work zones. A realignment of the northern portion of the interim bike path is currently in place. This portion of the bike path reroutes to a protected, temporary two-lane bikeway located on the outside shoulder of the northbound I-5 off-ramp. The interim bike path realignment is anticipated to be in place through November 2018.   • Temporary Realignment of Rose Canyon Bike Path and I-5 Impacts: The new realignment of the Rose Canyon Bike Path is now complete. Cyclists are being directed to use the new temporary bikeway between July 25, 2017, and approximately November 2018. A portion of the Rose Canyon Bike Path reroutes to a protected, temporary two-lane bikeway located on the outside shoulder of the northbound I-5 off-ramp. View additional information.
  • I-5 Closures and Balboa Off-Ramp Temporary Closure: The off-ramp from northbound I-5 to eastbound Balboa Avenue will be closed on Sunday, July 9, from 3 a.m. to 10 a.m. while crews work in the area on utility relocation. Detour routes are available by taking the northbound I-5 exit at Clairemont Drive/Mission Bay Drive. Also on Sunday morning, while crews transfer existing utility lines, brief, intermittent traffic closures on northbound and southbound I-5 near Balboa Avenue will be necessary from 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. The California Highway Patrol will be on site to monitor traffic flow.   • Ocean Beach Bike Path Closure: The Ocean Beach Bike Path is scheduled to close through Friday, May 5, 2017, for San Diego River Bridge Double Track construction and bridge improvements, including demolition, drainage, and repaving work on and near the existing bike path. Please follow signage to detour the bike path via Pacific Highway and Taylor Street. Use extra caution when traveling near the work area.
  • Genesee Avenue Pedestrian Bridge Demolition: Crews will demolish and permanently remove the pedestrian bridge at Executive Square and Genesee Avenue. A full road closure of Genesee Avenue from La Jolla Village Drive to Eastgate Mall will be required to complete this work from 9 p.m. on Friday, March 31, through 5 a.m. on Monday, April 3, and from 9 p.m. on Friday, April 7, through 5 a.m. on Monday, April 10. Crews will re-stripe crosswalks and install temporary pedestrian crossing signals the first weekend, and demolish the Genesee Avenue pedestrian bridge at Executive Square the following weekend. The pedestrian bridge is being demolished to make room for the future Executive Drive Station, which will also serve as a pedestrian crossing when the project is complete.   • Morena Boulevard Ramp Closure: Portions of the Morena Boulevard ramp are scheduled to close 24 hours a day starting 7 p.m., on Friday, April 21, through 5 a.m. Monday, April 24, 2017, as part of utility relocation and connection construction activities. The northbound Morena Boulevard ramp connecting to eastbound Balboa Avenue and the eastbound Balboa Avenue ramp connecting to southbound Morena Boulevard will both be closed. The ramp connecting eastbound Balboa Avenue to northbound Morena Avenue will remain open. Detour signage and routes will be in effect.

MARCH 2017

  • Gilman Drive Bike Lane Near Rose Canyon Bike Path: A portion of the bike lane on Gilman Drive, below the I-5 freeway overpass, will be intermittently closed for project construction access. Cyclists will still be able to access the Rose Canyon Bike Path. Please exercise extra caution when traveling near the work area. View additional information.
  • Morena Boulevard Construction Activities: Beginning in March 2017, Mid-Coast Trolley construction crews will start construction along Morena Boulevard from Clairemont Drive to Balboa Avenue. Initial activities will include traffic barrier installation, vegetation removal, utility installation, and wall construction for the future light rail infrastructure. To accommodate this work, the southbound lane of Morena Boulevard closest to the railroad tracks (the furthest west lane) will be closed to traffic for the duration of the project. Additionally, various portions of Morena Boulevard between Balboa Avenue and Tecolote Road may be reduced to one lane in either direction throughout the life of the project. Additional truck traffic should be anticipated during this work. Specific locations for lane reductions will vary as crews make progress on the new trolley line. Road conditions will change throughout the construction process and motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians should use extra caution when traveling near the work area and remain aware of travel speed and road conditions. Work hours are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., although intermittent weekend work will sometimes be required. Traffic controls will remain in place 24 hours a day.   • Rose Canyon Bike Path Temporary Closure: The Rose Canyon Bike Path will be closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, February 7 through Friday, February 10 while SDG&E crews work on overhead utilities. Flashing message boards are posted in various locations to notify cyclists of the closure. Three shuttles will be provided for cyclists continuously during the closure hours, running to/from the two ends of the bike path. Flaggers will be on-site to direct cyclists on how to take the shuttle at each end of the path.
  • Vegetation Removal along West Side of I-5: On January 30, crews began preparation work to remove trees and shrubs from the Caltrans right-of-way next to the southbound lanes of I-5 (the west side of the freeway from the La Jolla Village Drive off-ramp to the Nobel Drive off-ramp) in the future path of the trolley project. This work will require traffic controls, including installation of temporary barricades along the west side of southbound I-5. The vegetation removal work is anticipated to last approximately two months. Upon completion of all construction activities required in support of the Mid-Coast Trolley project in this location, vegetation will be planted. View additional information on this construction activity.
  • Genesee Avenue Road Widening: Work will begin in February 2017 to widen Genesee Avenue from Regents Road to La Jolla Village Drive. JANUARY 2017 

  • Rose Canyon Bike Path: During the weekends of January 13-16 and 27-30, 2017, crews will be working in and around the Rose Canyon Bike Path. The work originally scheduled for the weekend of January 20-23 has been postponed. During construction, the bike path will remain open with some intermittent detours. Please be aware of onsite flaggers and check for directional signs.
  • Marian Bear Memorial Park: Crews have fenced off an area within the Rose Creek Channel, near the existing railroad tracks, for construction activities and staging equipment purposes. There will be no access along the Rose Creek channel between Marian Bear Memorial Park and Rose Creek open space. Users of the Marian Bear Park trail should avoid entering or passing through the construction area. Please follow direction of the posted signs.

December 2016

  • Work began in late 2016 on I-5 near Gilman Drive to prepare for construction of the Gilman Drive Bridge. Crews have installed temporary barricades near Gilman Drive that will remain for approximately two years.   • Crews continue to work nights to minimize impacts to local traffic on Balboa Avenue, Morena Boulevard and Santa Fe Street.   • This fall, crews will begin work along Friars Road between Sea World Drive and Napa Street to build the San Diego River Bridge Double Track project in advance of construction on the Mid Coast Trolley project. Throughout the course of the project, several traffic control phases involving multiple lane closures and shifts will be implemented along Friars Road to help facilitate this work. View construction notice.
  • This fall crews will return to the CP Rose Track Crossovers Project work area to complete work on a storm drain and to replace the existing wood rail ties with concrete rail ties. This work will be completed during a full weekend work window. During the October 14-17 weekend, crews will be working 24 hours a day, while a full railroad service closure is in effect. This work will require the use of heavy machinery and may be disruptive. Crews will minimize impacts to neighboring homes as much as possible.

september 2016

  • Beginning September 23, through September 26, 2016, a temporary weekend lane closure will be in effect on Balboa Avenue/Garnet Avenue while crews continue utility relocation and installation work. Lanes will be temporarily shifted on Balboa Avenue/Garnet Avenue between Morena Boulevard and Mission Bay Drive. While traffic flow in both eastbound and westbound directions will be maintained throughout construction, each direction will be temporarily transitioned to single lanes of service.
  • Starting this fall, crews will begin work within the railroad right-of-way, northeast of Santa Fe Street (north and south of Jutland Drive) to begin construction of new bridges in support of the Elvira to Morena Double Track project. The majority of work will be conducted away from the roadway. Santa Fe Street and the Rose Creek Bike Path will remain open at all times. Truck traffic may be increased in the area during this time. Intermittent flagging will be in place at each work site when truck traffic is increased.

August 2016

  • As part of a related utility relocation project, the Balboa Avenue off-ramp on northbound I-5 will be closed from 7 p.m. on Friday, August 12, through 5 a.m. on Monday, August 15, and 7 p.m. on Friday, August 19, through 5 a.m. on Monday, August 22. Please use the Clairemont Drive/Mission Bay Drive exit to detour. Additional weekend closures of the Balboa Avenue off-ramp may be required to complete this work. Advanced notice will be provided.

  • Crews are working to construct an interim bike path to support dry utility re-locations. The existing Rose Canyon Bike Path will be temporarily realigned during construction of the Trolley extension. The new interim bike path will open in June 2016.

APRIL 2016

  • Crews are anticipated to begin work on Genesee Avenue at the intersection of Eastgate Mall starting spring 2016. Night work hours will be in effect, and some lane closures will be necessary to complete the work.

MARCH 2016

  • Santa Fe Street: crews are working day and night shifts to complete a water line installation. Traffic controls are currently in place. Work is anticipated to continue through June 2016. SDG&E will begin a separate utility relocation project in the same area beginning June 2016 through winter 2016. 

FEBRUARY 2016

  • In preparation for construction of the new Gilman Drive Bridge across I-5, crews are removing vegetation along both sides of the freeway, between Genesee Avenue and La Jolla Village Drive. Shoulder or lane closures may be in place during this work, which is expected to be completed in mid-February.

  • Beginning in January 2016, crews have been at work in the areas of Balboa Avenue and Morena Boulevard. The majority of this work is being performed at night to minimize impacts to local traffic.

Temporary Realignment of Rose Canyon Bike Path and I-5 Impacts: The existing Rose Canyon Bike Path will be temporarily closed during construction of the Trolley extension. Crews have constructed an interim bike path to reroute bicycle traffic around work zones. A realignment of the northern portion of the interim bike path is currently in place. This portion of the bike path reroutes to a protected, temporary two-lane bikeway located on the outside shoulder of the northbound I-5 off-ramp. The interim bike path realignment is anticipated to be in place through November 2018. After the work is completed near the realigned northern portion of the interim path, the alignment will be restored to the interim path that was opened in July 2016.

·         Full Closures on I-5 for Installation of Columns: beginning the week of May 2, there will be a series of full closures on Interstate 5 through this May. Crews will be drilling and pouring concrete to build the column structures for the viaduct to carry the Trolley across the freeway. Northbound Interstate 5, from State Route 52 to La Jolla Village Drive, will be closed on Wednesday, May 2, and Thursday, May 3. Closures of southbound Interstate 5, from the Interstate 805 merge to Gilman Drive, are scheduled for Sunday, May 6, Tuesday, May 8, and Thursday, May 10. Closure hours are from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night. Traffic controls and detour routes will be placed. Construction schedule subject to change.

·         Morena Boulevard Construction Activities: Beginning May 2, northbound Morena Boulevard, from Balboa Avenue to Tecolote Road, will be reduced to one lane. Parking will also be temporarily removed on northbound Morena Boulevard, from McGraw Street to Baker Street. Southbound Morena Boulevard is reduced to one lane of traffic in some areas. Work hours will be during the day, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., but closures will remain in place 24 hours a day.

·         Temporary Realignment of Rose Canyon Bike Path and I-5 Impacts: In May 2018, a southern portion of the Rose Canyon Bike Path will be temporarily relocated to the west side of the train tracks, east of Interstate 5 and north of Santa Fe Street, while crews construct a new, permanent path. The interim path will connect the north end of Santa Fe Street to about 1,000 feet north of State Route 52. A temporary realignment of the northern portion of the bike path is also in place, rerouting to a protected, temporary two-lane bikeway located on the outside shoulder of the northbound I-5 off-ramp. Sections of the permanent path will be reopened as they are completed.

Full Closure of Executive Square Driveway: Beginning Thursday, March 18 and continuing through Sunday, March 22, a full closure of the Executive Square driveway will be in place for crews to replace a cross gutter. Construction activities will include demolition and placing concrete, which will require several days to cure. Work and closure hours will be from 8 p.m. on Thursday to 5 a.m. on Monday. Access will be maintained, and signage will be in place. Please use caution when traveling in the work area.
